USA Dance Chapter 2017
Board Meeting
February 23, 2011
Present: Greg Warner, Jill Smith, Carolyn Tommeras, Sally Arrindell, Dave, Arrindell, Karrie Geroux, Paula Boos, Rita Russell, Terry Russell and Maggie Brimijoin
Greg Warner called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m. The Minutes were approved.
Treasurer’s Report: Rita and Terry said that the 2010 Treasurer’s Report due March lst to Nationals is still pending awaiting final figures from the previous treasurer. At the moment, there is $7,120.22 in the account. However, they just received notice of an overdue bill from the Senior Center for $675.00 and another payment of $675.00 is due soon. The Board approved the purchase of the new music system (the Bose SoundDock Portable at $459.7 ) which will also be deducted from the balance. We are also expecting a bill from Eliza for her work on the website. Rita and Terry have designed a new report format which shows Revenues from the February Dance, Sunday evening lesson and Community Education ($1,249.50) and Expenses this month of $746.68 covering the Senior Citizen rental, lst Sunday instructor and the Valentine’s Dance. The report also broke down the dance attendance by category which showed that our new student rate of $5.00 brought in 27 dancers for a total of $135.00. A success! In the future, we need to have everyone sign in even if they are performers because, by signing in, dancers acknowledge the “waiver of liability” at the top of the sheet.
ASCAP/BMI music license: As mentioned last month, many local chapters around the country want the ASCAP license to play music at the dances and the National organization prefers working with BMI. It is difficult to search BMI because they list by title and writer, and we want title and artist. Most of the locally requested songs are not on BMI’s list. The BMI license is purchased by Nationals and they are working on sending out play lists to local chapters. If we were to purchase the ASCAP license which has better listings, someone here would have to sign for it and be liable personally. Unless we want to risk violating copy-write, we will have to separate our local chapter’s music downloads which is very time-consuming to do and play only BMI music. Or we could hire only ASCAP licensed D.J.’s to play at the dances. Or we could move the dances to an ASCAP licensed facility like Blue Moon. Or we could see if the Senior Center would sign for a license if we pay. We will contact the Senior Center.
March Dance: Carolyn reported that Fred and Myrna Gommels will be teaching Nightclub Two-Step at the March Dance and Kim Wettelson will D.J. It is Mary Schenowick ‘s(?) 100th birthday. Jill will contact the KTTC, Fox, and the PB. Sally will arrange for the cake and coffee and balloons. Karrie will get a corsage. We will request a few polkas and have a place for people to write messages for her.
Publicity: Jill suggested that we give USA Dance flyers to the dance studios for new students. Maggie suggested we include a special “get in free” ticket so we can see which students are new and make them feel welcome. Maggie will send out the email notice of the Sunday evening lesson on March 6th to members.
Youth: The Minneapolis USA Dance chapter helped our local University of Minnesota Dance Competitors pay for their expenses at the Star of the North Competition. We discussed giving a scholarship to these dancers for future competitions. There are still tentative plans for a “dollar dance” fundraiser at one of the upcoming dances for this local team. The young dancers who attended the February dance were very helpful in cleaning up after the dance.
Demo’s: Sally said that we will be doing a demo at the Salvation Army’s Adult Day Care on March 22 from 12:30 to 1:30 and we will receive $20.0 for our music library. This is the 11th year that we have volunteered to teach swing dancing at Mayo High School’s American Studies Classes. It will be scheduled sometime between Mar 4th and April 4th.
The meeting adjourned at 8:40 pm. Respectfully submitted by Maggie.
